2023 promises to be a challenging year for the construction sector

Like almost every other sector in the current climate, the construction industry is having to face up to a number of difficult challenges in 2023. In a world which is still getting back to pre-covid normality, the year ahead looks set to be a difficult one for everyone involved. Having said that, here at Tayside Construction we feel we’re in a very strong position to face all potential obstacles.

Perhaps the main area of concern for the industry is the continuing skills shortage, an issue that has been around for many years. The demands placed upon construction companies of all shapes and sizes are powerful, but it seems there just aren’t enough skilled workers to help us cope with the surge. Attracting young people into the industry isn’t easy at the moment, perhaps in part because the prospects of working in warm, dry, comfortable offices seem so much more of a temptation.

Of course, no discussion about the construction sector in 2023 would be complete without mentioning the uncertainties in the economy. We keep hearing stories in the media about increasing prices, wages that don’t keep up with inflation and worries about the long-term costs of petrol, energy and the like. The end result is a country in which many people and organisations simply don’t have the confidence to invest in construction projects.

Adapting to new demands within the industry

The move towards net zero has resulted in more people looking to make their homes greener, and while this is obviously a very welcome development, it places more pressure on the industry. New initiatives inevitably lead to regulations being tightened and more environmental standards being introduced. As a result, the industry is having to learn new ways of working, which takes time and effort, plus an investment in staff training.

Another important issue to take into consideration is that of the overall supply chain. There’s little doubt that things have improved somewhat in recent months, but some constructors, particularly the large-scale operators, are still having problems with obtaining vital materials. Experts predict this will get better, but when that will actually happen is open to debate.

The overall problems for the construction industry have had a greater impact on the big hitters within the sector, rather than independent companies like our own. In general, we’ve been able to operate as usual throughout last year and into this one, and we have a great deal of confidence about the future. Part of the reason for this is our superb relationships with clients right across eastern Scotland.
