Pay attention to what your home’s boiler is telling you

Like so many other homeowners around the country, you probably rarely ever think about your boiler and the functions it performs. We all take our efficient radiators and hot showers for granted, and that’s perfectly understandable. But if something was going wrong, you would need to do something about it very quickly. The problem for many people, however, is knowing what to look for. Here are four tell-tale signs that your boiler may need attention.

The sniff test

Malfunctioning boilers will sometimes start to emit unpleasant odours, so if you smell something that doesn’t seem quite right, you need to speak to a plumbing and heating expert as soon as possible. If that odour is sulphurous, and smelling like bad eggs, it could indicate a gas leak. This, of course, is something that requires the immediate attention of a qualified specialist.

Paying more for your gas

Every domestic boiler, irrespective of manufacturer, will inevitably start to under-perform after a period of time, but it’s not always easy to detect that deterioration. One of the most effective ways to find out is to keep a close eye on your energy bills. If you’re paying more for your gas, it may mean that a replacement boiler is required. As always, the experts at Tayside Construction can advise you.

Detecting a water leak

If you have discovered a water leak in your boiler, even a very small one, you need to call in the professionals. Leakage is usually an indication that one of the internal parts is damaged. This could be a seal, for example, or perhaps a valve. Make no mistake here, a water leak can be extremely dangerous, so you shouldn’t just ignore it and hope it might go away.

Under-performing

You expect a certain standard of efficiency from your domestic boiler, but if there is a gradual deterioration in performance it may be that you don’t even notice it. If you realise one day that your boiler and radiators aren’t as effective as they once were, it may be time to consider a replacement. New models currently available on the market are extremely good, and will perform at an extremely high standard.

There are other tell-tale signs to look out for, including noisier operations and occasional breakdowns. To get the most from your current boiler, you need to ensure it is regularly serviced and well-maintained. If this happens, potential issues can be detected at a far earlier stage, enabling skilled experts to prevent molehills from turning into mountains. If you’ve left your boiler unchecked for a number of years, now could be the perfect time to make a call to the professionals.
