Is it time to upgrade your skirting boards?

When you first walk into any room in the house, there will be many aspects of that room that will catch your eye immediately. You might notice the artwork, for example, or perhaps the patterns in the wallpaper. You may even be impressed from the start by the carpets or the curtains. It’s relatively safe to assume that your eyes won’t be drawn by the condition of the skirting boards, however.

This shouldn’t detract from the fact that your skirting boards are important, and can play a significant role in the aesthetic impact of any room, from kitchens and bedrooms to lounges and bathrooms. If you’re considering a makeover of your entire home at the moment, or even of a specific room, this could be the right time to give your skirting boards a whole new look.

The problem for many skirting boards is that they have to endure a great many knocks over any given period. Every time you move furniture around, every time the kids are playing rigorous games with their toys and every time you spill something, there’s a good chance that some form of damage will be suffered by your wooden boards.

Time to repaint, or time to completely replace?

In many homes, the only improvement the skirtings boards see is a rub-down with sandpaper and a new coat of paint every few years. This is all very well, but there will come a time when replacement will be a better option. Some DIY enthusiasts will be able to carry out a full replacement, of course, but for others it will need the attentions of a skilled, experienced specialist.

Unless you are particularly skilled at carpentry, calling in an expert will definitely be the ideal option. There are a number of tasks needed to create the right look, including of course cutting the boards to the required length and at the appropriate angles for corners. If you plan to do the job yourself, you’ll need the correct tools as well as the requisite skills.

Skirting boards come in a variety of designs, of course, and are generally made from either solid wood or MDF. The final design you select will be up to you, as will the colour you choose to paint them. In the majority of homes, this will generally be a gloss white, but these days it’s not a surprise to see them painted grey or perhaps even black.
