Making the most of your external buildings

There are many people around the country who have outhouses, greenhouses or external workshops on their properties. These extremely useful structures can serve as anything from a storage area to a personal gym and all spaces in between. Over the years, we at Tayside Construction have carried out a number of projects to either create or convert such a building for both domestic and commercial clients.

This time of year, we tend to start thinking about getting back outside a little more often. The days are starting to get longer now, of course, so it’s only natural that we want to leave the confines of the house. One of the most common drawbacks at such a time, however, is that your external buildings could be in need of a major spring clean before they become usable again.

So where would you start? Well, if it’s at all possible you could start by clearing everything out before the cleaning gets under way. If you have another building in which to put everything, or perhaps a room in the house, then do so. If not, you can leave everything outside, preferably underneath a strong tarpaulin to make sure the contents are well protected from the weather.

Ceiling, walls and floor, in that order

Once the area is empty, thoroughly wash down the walls and the internal ceiling. There will doubtless be many stains, cobwebs and dust collections that need to be removed, of course, and there may be a need for some elbow grease along the way. When you’re done, focus on cleaning the floor thoroughly. If you have a pressure washer, this will help you achieve the best results.

In any outside space, windows will inevitably get increasingly dirty. Use a strong commercial cleaner to wash away the accumulated grime in order to let as much light in as possible. Then, when all these tasks are completed, you can start to put everything back. This is the perfect time to think about the overall layout, and of course to decide whether every item you have is actually still required.

Should you decide instead to start all over again, you’ll be pleased to know that our talented professionals can help you right from the start. We can assist with the overall design, for example, and we can provide everything from doors, windows, flooring, electrics, plumbing, plastering, heating and roofing. No matter how big your overall design is going to be, it’s so reassuring to know that you’ve engaged the services of the very best.
